Jesus disarmed powers for you!

Jesus disarmed powers for you! 8/5/14

Bible reading Colossians 2 vs 13 – 15

Last week we talked about the need for the Holy Spirit in empowering us to be what we are- “witnesses” of the KOG. We highlighted the fact that we cannot separate the power of the Holy Spirit from the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our life. And that we need to experience both the power and the lordship, which the authority of Christ; in order for us to live a victorious life in this world. We established through the scripture that what Jesus promised in Act 1 vs 7; “power”… was fulfilled by God on the day of Pentecost when the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and the world has never been the same since, as these timid, unschooled, ordinary men became empowered to perform signs and wonders; teach and preach the message of the KOG to all and many people believed and their number grew…

We concluded that based on that event on the day of Pentecost, we all have been made competent as minister of the KOG in all its fullness. So we can pray for the sick in the name of Jesus and they will be healed… the blind can see … the oppressed can released… all because we have received power through the promised Holy Spirit.

Also in Joel 2 vs 26 God promised that he will; “He will pour out His Spirit on all people, the young will see visions, the old will dream dreams … there will be signs and wonders… and those that call upon the name of the Lord will be saved…” This is all to confirm that God knows that we will need power in conjunction with the authority that we received when we gave our lives to Christ in order for us to be victorious. Because authority without power is pathetic…

The result of these outpouring of Spirit of God will help explain the signs that we will begin to see in the last days… As believers in Christ Jesus, it is not for us to know the times set by our heavenly father but what is paramount is for us to receive power… Power is the force needed to do something… We need the force (Active power of God- Col 2 vs 12) to do God’s will in this time we are in. And what is God’s will/purpose to be witnesses. To be the signpost pointing people to Jesus. His purpose is that through the church He will be able to display his manifold wisdom to principalities and powers.

His purpose is that through the church He will be able to destroy the works of the devil in people’s lives. So you and I are not looking for purpose… what am I born to do? It is not a question for those who have given their lives to Jesus Christ and accepted him as their Lord and Saviour… Our purpose was here before we were conceived in our mother’s womb… Our purpose is to show forth the light and glory of God through Christ. How are we able to fulfil this purpose?

It is in our union with Christ. It is in our relationship with him. It is in our daily walk with him. Col 2:6-7… Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him… The power to do this is what the Holy Spirit was poured out for… And for that same reason in the last days, according to Joel 2; God will still pour out his Spirit on all flesh (everybody). So that those who want to call and who will call, can then be saved. It takes God’s active power (Col 2:12) to break and override the dominating power of the devil in the lives of people for salvation to break out and for people to be truly free. He rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us safe into the kingdom of his dear Son, by whom we are set free, that is our sins are forgiven.

In order for us to have full life, we need to be free. To be free means we have to be released from the captor… if there is one who is more powerful than our captor then we are guaranteed freedom; this is where Jesus Christ comes in… In him is the fullness of the power of the deity… 2:9 He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority… He freed himself and us from the power of the spiritual rulers and authorities; he made a public spectacle of them 2:15 2:11..freed from the power He has called us to the ministry of freeing people, because we have been given the power through the Holy Spirit.

My prayer today is that we experience the touch of the Holy Spirit and the power that comes with it, so that God’s divine purpose will be realised in each and every one of us. We pray that we will be made free of spiritual powers that have negatively dominated our lives, homes and nation; and be filled with the active power of God that raised Jesus from death. Amen.
